The Australian Veterinary Association is
advising pet owners to lessen the risk of snake-bite to their
animals this summer by spring cleaning their backyards. Snakes
are most likely to be attracted into backyards when they are
searching for water during dry periods and they will seek the
cover of long grass, rubbish and wood-heaps. They can also be
attracted to mice which may be found around compost heaps.
The majority of snake-bite cases occur in rural and
outer-suburban areas, however some animals are also bitten when
left to roam around water-courses in metropolitan areas.
Pet owners are encouraged to try and identify the breed of snake
responsible but should not endanger themselves in the process.
Sick animals should be immobilised and rushed immediately to the
vet for treatment. |
